All About Flannel Fabric Leather
Flannel is a light to medium weight fabric woven with a soft, slightly napped surface. Expensive flannels are made of wool and wool blends and are usually napped and fulled. Less expensive flannels are made of cotton and other fibers and are usually just napped.
A medium-weight, plain or twill weave fabric is typically made from wool, cotton or a wool and cotton blend. The fabric has a very soft hand and is brushed on both sides to lift the fiber ends out of the base fabric and create the soft, fuzzy surface. End-uses include bedding, shirts, skirts, suits, trousers, bathrobes and pajamas.
Flannel originated in Wales and has a soft, napped surface that partially cancels the weave. It is made in a variety of weights and has a dull finish. It is more loosely woven than worsted flannel with a higher nap and bulkier hand. Flannel has a tendency to shrink if not pre-shrunk and sags with wear. Be careful if ironing flannel; if you press too hard it can flatten in the nap. Flannel comes in many colors, weights, and fancy effects. Sometimes it has a prickly feel when worn.
(Worsted) - It has a twill weave and is made in a variety of weights. It is more closely woven and harder than wool flannel and can have a very slight nap on one side. It tailors and presses very well and holds a hard crease.
Clothing made from flannel is usually worn in cold weather climates due to the warmness that the fabric is known for. For much of its history, flannel was commonly thought to be the fabric of farmers, lumberjacks and woodsmen.
