The term matelasse refers to the quilted nature of a textile. Matelasse is a French word meaning "padded" or "quilted". Matelasse fabrics come in a variety of designs, colors, and fabric types. The most common type is cotton but matelasse can also be of a polyester blend or chenille fabric. This fabric is best utilized as an upholstery fabric or for bedding but can be used for slip covers, decorative pillows, and baby bedding because of its soft, quilted texture.
