Also known as Nauga, this artificial leather gets its name from Naugatuck, Connecticut, the city where Naugahyde was first manufactured. The fabric became famous after a humorous 1960's campaign that told consumers that Naugahyde was obtained when the fictional "Nauga" animal shed its skin. The campaign claimed that it was a more friendly process than that of leather, where the animal was slaughtered to obtain its hide. A popular song by Allen Sherman, "Chim Chim Cheree" further popularized the fabric with its naugahyde related lyrics in 1964.
