Paisley is usually used to describe a design developed for use on fine wool shawls made in Paisley, Scotland. The shawls were originally woven to imitate the woven shawls of Kashmir which had a cone design. The woven shawls proved too expensive to produce and the design was adapted for printing. The Paisley design itself changed to the scroll-like form it now has. Paisleys, both large and small, are almost never out of fashion and may be knitted into fabrics, woven into, or, more usually, printed on fabrics.
