Burlap is a woven fabric, made of coarse jute, and allied vegetable fibers. During World War II, burlap was used on combat helmets and has also been used as fish and shrimp netting. The construction industry has found use for this fabric’s breathable and durable nature in setting concrete and in the formation of linoleum. Burlap sacks are now widely used as a more eco-friendly alternative to plastic grocery bags because of their biodegradable properties. The decorating industry has also found use for this often overlooked fabric for wall coverings, upholstery fabrics, and as backing for rugs.
